Many, many years ago, waxing became the go-to hair removal treatment for the lot of us. It’s a quick session that’ll have your hair growing back in weeks, as opposed to mere days of growth when you shave.
Over the past year, however, we’ve heard and seen so much talk around diode laser hair removal. Now, laser hair removal treatments aren’t new by any means; but, diode has been the talk of the town lately because it’s apparently much less painful than other standard laser treatments.
If you’re curious as to whether or not diode laser hair removal is for you, then keep reading below.
What is diode laser hair removal?
Diode laser hair removal uses a targeted approach in damaging chromophores beneath the skin (melanin or blood) through selective photothermolysis. These lasers emit a single wavelength of light that rapidly heats up and targets melanin in the hair follicles to prevent regrowth. Meanwhile, the process is usually complemented by a cooling technology not only to protect the outermost layer of the skin, but also to greatly help with patient ease.
In simpler terms, it’s a series of high-frequency and low-fluence pulses that are effectively absorbed by melanin, damaging its root and blood flow to the follicle. It’s much less painful for the patient because it simultaneously utilizes a cooling technology to help reduce the sharp sensation.
Most clinics and studies claim that diode laser hair removal is currently the most efficient and comfortable laser treatment in getting rid of unwanted hair because it offers the deepest penetration level. It’s safe for many parts of the body, including your face, arms, underarms, back, legs, neck, chest, bikini lines, and more.
How often should I get diode laser hair removal?
In most cases, it’s recommended to come back to get the diode laser hair removal treatment every four to six weeks. During the first few sessions, patients may still see some hair growth, but results can be noticed after about three sessions.
Note, however, that the frequency of sessions will depend on the area of your body that you will be getting treated. Upper body parts–such as the face and underarms–will typically require eight to 10 sessions. Parts on your lower body, such as the legs and bikini line, can be concluded in a maximum of eight sessions.
Another factor in the number of sessions to be undertaken would be the thickness of your hair. In some cases, you will be asked to come back for touch-up sessions just to completely eliminate the hair.
Can diode laser permanently remove hair?
Diode laser hair removal can be a permanent solution to getting rid of unwanted hair. However, you’ll need to come in every year or so (depending on what your technician recommends) to touch up and revisit a few areas that need to be re-lasered. This is necessary because your hair does not grow all at once at the same time; so, it’s only natural that some will grow after you’ve gotten the treatment done. The upside is that hair won’t be as thick as the first time. Usually, you’ll only notice thin strands of hair growing sparsely.
What should I avoid after diode laser?
There are a few important things to remember after getting diode laser hair removal.
Within the first two to three weeks, you’ll notice a lot of hair fallout, which may cause some itching or dryness. Do NOT scratch, rub, or pick the area; instead, gently pat a thin layer of soothing cream of aloe vera ointment (recommended by your technician) throughout the day to keep the area moisturized.
Here are a few more things to avoid within the first two to three days post-treatment:
- DON’T take hot showers, hot baths, or saunas.
- DON’T swim in chlorinated water.
- DON’T wear tight clothing.
- DON’T exfoliate, bleach, or use any chemical that can further cause irritation.
- DON’T do strenuous exercises where you’d be heavily sweating.
Though it doesn't happen very often, some swelling can occur. And when it does, you can relieve it with ice wrapped in clean cloth. If you need to take some medicine for the pain, seek counsel from your technician on which ones are safe for you to take.
