Most of us have that one go-to lunch spot. It’s a no-fail option on days when we’re seeking comfort food, simply because the menu is familiar and perennially good.
Deli by Chele is one of our spots and we love how consistent they’ve been in churning out gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, and other deli-style items that are made with locally sourced ingredients since 2020. But really, it’s their lip-smacking sandwiches (at least, in our opinion) that take center stage every time and leave us hungry for more.
Just recently, though, the modern deli introduced a new item on their menu–the NY Style Brisket Pastrami Fried Rice.
Apparently, Chefs Chele and Carlos, the genius minds and hands behind the beloved restau, played around with a lot of combinations with the NY Style Pastrami to make it more pleasing for the Filipino palate. The instantaneous–not to mention, obvious–winner, was rice. And after a few more tweaks, they finally created a delicious bowl perfect for quick meals.
The bowl itself is quite filling and savory, beautifully composed of NY Style Brisket Pastrami slices, Japanese fried rice, fried egg, the pastrami juice, spring onions, spices, and a whole lot of other good stuff. Pastrami trimmings from their sandwiches are also incorporated into the dish, as they’re big on sustainability and saying no to food waste.
From our field test, the pastrami was really good and packed with flavor, but the load of spices wasn’t overwhelming. The dish balanced out really well, too, with the runny yolk that reminded us of that good, ol’ “silog” feel. And while the Japanese rice looked plain at first sight, it was definitely filling and flavorful, as well.
The best way to dig in is to go straight into that golden yolk and let it ooze onto the beef and the entire bowl. Give it a good mix and enjoy–and for us, it’s a total hit and we can’t wait to see what more rice bowls they come up with!
The Pastrami Fried Rice bowl is priced at P295, which is considerably more affordable than their gourmet sandwiches and would be perfect for quick on-the-go bites.
For dessert, we suggest giving their Chika, or the Cheesecake Bibingka, a try. It’s the perfect dessert to a savory meal–not too sweet with a delicate texture.
While you’re at it, we highly recommend trying out a few of their sandwiches, too.
